5 Reasons why Yoga contributes to your mental health

This week (May 18th - May 24th) is Mental Health Awareness Week. A week where special attention is given to mental health and we are delighted to share some of our knowledge with you!

For this first day we will be discussing 5 reasons why Yoga contributes to your mental health, so let's get started!

1. Movement releases Endorphins

Something we all have heard about; by moving your body your body creates endorphins. Endorphins are known as "feel-good" chemicals for a reason!

2. It balances Mind & Body

When suffering from mental health problems you are often stuck in your thoughts. By practicing Yoga you learn to check in with your body and thus balance body & mind. If you practice this often enough, you will find that Yoga can really bring you a release from the ongoing "talks" in your mind.

3. Yoga is without obligations

We are all familiar with the pressure of society. We all have to be the best, look the best and there is pressure coming from many angles. When coping with mental health issues, this pressure can be really terrifying and can lead to numbness or lethargy. Luckily there is yoga; a practice where you can just anything you want! There is no perfect pose, and if you are done practicing with the class, you can just go into childspose.

4. You are taken care off

Ahh, everyone has this favorite Yoga teacher. When she/he starts to talk you automatically calm down, you feel safe and supported doing the poses and they give you some extra attention and relaxation during Shavasana! Yoga teachers are the ultimate safety and support facilitators!

5. YOU CAN CRY IN CLASS!

YOU CAN ACTUALLY CRY IN YOGA CLASSES AND GET APPLAUDED (in silence)!

It's true! Because the practice of Yoga is not purely focused on the physical level, but also on the mental and emotional, no Yoga teacher will ever look at you in a weird way when crying. Heck, we even dare to say that EVERY Yoga teacher or frequent practitioner has cried in class at least once!
